In Memoriam (2015-2016)
Textile rug, hessian, prints
A hand-made rug, crafted from clothing and various fabrics. During the five-month process of making, the artist was forced to reflect upon every material used, in what became an emotionally consuming and physically draining routine. In Memoriam is made up of fabrics and clothing hoarded from people and places that hold significant and sometimes quite painful memories; the artist aimed to create something homely and comforting from all of her feelings of loss. The piece is shown with a collection of photographs displaying what the rug is crafted from. Choosing a historically maternal craft reflects the compassionate connotations of the work. The colour of the rug goes from hot to cold, the way many things in life do; bodies, relationships and memories.
